A little girl after my own heart. This little girl belongs to one of my besties... If you know me well, then you know my nick name is B-Love, short for Brittany Love (Love is my middle name). So when Miss Preslee came along, my friend decided to name her Preslee Love, and so now we all call her P-Love. She was so good for me on this day. She happens to be my little girls' bestie too. So thankful for sweet friends. God has been so good to us that way.

The "C" family

Meet the "C" family...Aren't they presh? We had to do this shoot uber fast because there was a HUGE, and when I say Huge, I mean HUGE...storm cloud following us. I kind of thought it would miss us, becasue off to the east there were blue clear skies, and so I thought it would go around us. Slowly, but surely, we started to hear thunder, then lightning, and then we decided to jump in our cars and leave. I'm so glad we did, because as I was driving home it just unloaded all kinds of hail and wind and rain like I've never seen. I'm pretty sure I drove straight through a tornado. We made it out safe, and I was really pleased at how these turned out.

Oh, also, the pretty little momma in these picutres owns her own Cup Cake Biz. She's gonna be famous someday...watch out for her. Her company is called Amy Cakes. The cup cakes are as pretty as they are delish!... Look her up. She does the most amazing work I've ever seen. When I asked her how she stayed so skinny, she just said, I've been doing this for so long now, its just work...I would totally weigh 400 pounds if I baked cupcakes all day....I have no will power when it comes to cupcakes....

This couple was so fun to photograph. We met downtown and walked around to some of my favorite places and took some fun engagement photos. Jordan and Trey had such great chemistry. They were so comfortable in front of the camera and you could just feel the love. I'm looking forward to your big day...won't be long.

Jordan and Trey's first date was at Bourbon Street Cafe in Bricktown, so we met there for our first few pics and then walked all around downtown.

It happened to be the hotteset day of the year when we took these pics...it was only a couple of weeks ago. It was a whopping 95 degrees. But the day before, it was 65 and two days after it was 68...go figure. This Oklahoma weather has us all confused. These cute kiddos were so good and so fun to photograph. I love new challenges with each client. I've photographed a couple of these kids before, some of my favs in fact, but this time we were able to get all the grandkiddos in a pic, just for Grandma. The Loving "L" Family

Its not normal to have kids this cute actually like to have their picture taken. This little guy kept telling me how much he liked having his picture taken and I was like, "what?" I loved it. He was such a ham....and his little baby sister was such a happy baby. I got to take her pictures when she was a newborn and is now just over a year old. This mom wanted an urban family shoot so we went to my favorite alley and had some fun. Enjoy your sneak peek.

I really loved photographing this girl. She is so beautiful and has such a great sense of style. She was so confident and so comfortable in her own skin. The camera loved her and we had a great time shooting downtown on this beautiful evening. I really enjoyed getting to know her. Brooklyn is a super stud gymnast. If you want arms, legs, and a body like hers, you need to spend about 4 hours a day doing gymnastics. That's right, I asked. Enjoy your sneak peek, and I wish you all the best next year.

Hitched {Will +Kate}

Its only been 3 days since the royal wedding and I'm still thinking about it. How magnificent was that? From her dress, to his uniform, to the trees, to the checkered floor, to the beautiful detail of the Abby, and of course the awesomeness of those hats. I think everyone should put on their wedding invitation, "Hat's required!" How much fun would that be. There were some really great hats and some not so great hats. :/

I even dreamed about the royal wedding that night....all night long. I thought about it during my run the next morning. I was thinking about what they might be thinking about and their new life together. Who doesn't love a good fairytale coming to life, right? Cinderella only the clock doesn't strike 12:00.

My neighbor across the street was hosting a watch party starting at 4am. So I thought I'd be the first one there and so I roll out of bed, throw on my bathrobe and my slippers at about 4:30 and head across the street in the pitch dark of morning. I get over there and I'm the last one to arrive. There were about 15 people there. I got there just in time to see the Queen get out of her car into Westminister Abby. It all just seemed so magical. It really is all that fairytales are made of. They really do exist.It was such a fun memory being with all of those ladies and girls watching the wedding of the century. I know I'll remember it for ever. I still remember Princess Diana's wedding. I remember the crowd outside St. Paul's cathedral and I remember even as a little girl, "Look at all those people. This must be a big deal."

Its official I'm obsessed. I love Will and Kate, they just seem so normal. I'm sure if they knew me, we'd be friends. :)Maybe I'll get to meet them someday.

They got married in Mexico but had a reception back here in OKC, so we were able to get a few shots of them before their reception and then we has us a great time at their party.

The reception was held downtown at the Jim Thorpe Museum...such a great place.

Spring is finally here. Thanks you Jesus. I love Spring its one of my favorite times of the year. I love taking pics of flowers too. In fact that is one of the first things I used to take pics of when my love of photography began, before I had kids of course. I would take pictures of flowers and then turn them into greeting cards. Tap, Tap, Tap. Is this thing on? I know I've been M.I.A,but its just been so crazy around here with Spring Break and all. I've been meaning to post pics from this wedding and a few others since the last but just haven't gotten around to it. I have lots to post in the next few days so stay tuned....

On to this fabulous couple.... I knew the first time I met Camber, we'd be fast friends. She. is. awesome...to say the least. She literally lights up a room when she walks in and she has such a sweet fun care-free spirit about her that I love. Her beau, Matthew was equally as cool. As soon as I met him, I felt like I'd known him for years, maybe because we're from the same hometown of Houston, Texas. I don't know, but he might be the most sincere groom (no offense other grooms) I've ever met. Super. duper. nice.

Anyway, this is such a massive post...so take a seat and chillax.

They were married in the chapel at Crossing Church in OKC.

I can't hold these in any longer. I loooooved how these turned out. We took all these pics when we were couped up for 5 days inside, a foot of snow outside on the ground and no school. I have been DYING to share these images. Since the wedding was last night I can finally share them. Camber is one of the most beautiful brides I've ever seen. Her dress was stunning, and I loved her birdcage vail. It was so perfect. The wedding last night was loads of fun and so many familiar faces. I'll share those in the next few weeks. Anyway, I love how these bridals turned out. Hopefully, you do too.

tip: finding the light & before and after

I don't really have an agenda here, its just when I think of something that might help someone, I just need to write it down, so here I am blogging about it. I would say I'm kind of a free-spirited, fly by the seat of my pants kind of girl, and that is just how I roll. I am not a writer. I'll be the first to tell you that. So I hope you find this helpful and that it makes sense. I joked to my husband yesterday that if they had "Are you smarter than a 2nd grader show", I would probably not win. Some of the homework my kids bring home I'm like "WHAT?" I forgot what a past participle was, and what shape is a rhombus? I have a college degree, not sure why I can't remember some of the things I learned when I was in the 2nd grade, but I can solve a Chemisty problem without fail.

Most photographers know that lighting in a picture can make all the difference in the world. It can set the whole mood of a photograph. Finding the "light" is not always the easiest thing in the world to do, but I'll give you a few pointers that helped me out. I am a 85% natural light photographer, which means I use the sun for light. I prefer natural light to strobes. I usually use strobes when I'm in my studio, if a client asks for it, or if its just too cold or rainy outside to shoot. As a photographer you are always looking for the sweet light. The best time to find that sweet light is during the golden hour, which is just before sunrise or about an hour before sunset. This is when I prefer shooting, when everything has this warm glow to it. However, you can find great light just about anytime of day. In the next photgraph you can see the sun setting just over the trees, this is the perfect time to shoot. But you have to be quick because once that sun goes down, the light is gone.

I would say, the very worst time to shoot is high noon, simply becuase the sun is directly over head which tends to cast shadows under the eyes. I almost NEVER EVER shoot a client's session at noon. The average Joe, has no idea about how lighting can affect a picture. I know I didn't really understand it either until the pursuit of photography began for me.

If you are shooting at high noon, look for open shade or under an over hang. Even in open shade if its high noon, you'll have a hard time avoiding shadows under the eyes. Even if you shoot under a tree, more than likely you'll have harsh shadows from the leaves of the tree or hotspots. This next example is of an image shot at 1:00 in the afternoon. The slightest tilt of the sun can make a huge difference. One Saturday afternoon in the dead middle of summer, I wanted to see if I could find the light. So I grabbed my little girl, bribed her with ice cream, dressed her up like a hippy, and out the door we went. These happen to be some of my favorite images of all time. But, we were in a very narrow alley and I had found "open shade".

You can see from this next image how narrow the alleyway really was. But...there was an overhang, so the lighting was actually really beautiful.

This image was shot on another wall, that literally had an over hang of about 6 inches, but it gave me enough shade to shade her face and give me pretty light.

In this image you can still see that the lighting is coming from above, but its not directly over head.

Its funny now, because I can't look at a magazine or a picture or movies without noticing the lighting. I look to see where its coming from, how it illuminates the face and where it is in the eyes. Even in a movie, I can tell which light is natural and which light isn't.

Here is another example of a Before and After shot that I took of Mariava. The reason I'm sharing this with you is so that you will understand what goes into editing a picture. It doesn't come SOOC looking like that. It takes a long time to adjust the colors and all the adjustments in a picture. I do not use many actions, I make all adjustments in photoshop to my taste. And while some say it may look over processed, I happen to like it. I'm a colorful kind of gal, and so this is what I prefer. I do appreciate the washed out vintagy look, but everytime I try to edit like that, I tend to go back to what I love with the vibrance of color. So, please know, I feel like when I show a before picture I'm completely "exposed", if you will, but also think its important you see the final product to appreciate the time invovled in a final image.

{Senior} Mariava

I took these pics of Mariava last fall, but thankfully she was patient enough to wait out my crazy family season for me to edit these. Anyway, I think she is incredibly beautiful and I love how these turned out. She was so natural in front of the camera. I do remember it was a super windy day on this day, so we have some pics of crazy hair, but I actually really like the whispy-ness of it. I hope some model scout see this...she could totally be a model.

Snowed in....

Monday night it snowed 8 inches. We literally have been snowed in for two whole days. School has been cancelled for 2 days and tomorrow for a third day. Cabin Fever, na, its been nice to be all snuggled up watching movies, catching up on some work...its been a good thing. So, today we went out to one of my favorite places and took the sled. It is about 10 degrees here, and the kids only lasted for about 7 minutes, but we made some memories. Stay warm.

Jenn + Stephen = Married

This wedding was shot in Houston last weekend. I love this couple. Jenn is my husbands step sister. She is such a great sister in law. Jenn is so good to my family. She works for Hallmark and she always remembers to send special cards on special days. I was delighted when she asked me to take pics of her wedding. Their rehearsal dinner was at the original Ninfa's. Ninfa's is one of the best Mexican places in Texas. So yummy.

"Something Blue"

I remember being in a Kate Spade store a few years ago and this gal was looking for blue shoes to wear for her wedding day and I thought that was so clever. Plus, they'll make you feel completely fabulous...and they make for great pictures.

Canon vs. Nikon.....

...that is the question. When I first began this journey of photography that was one of the biggest decisions I had to make. I was about to invest a bunch of money into one of these two brands of cameras. My first SLR was actually a Minolta. My parents got it for me for a graduation gift from high school and it was love at first sight. However, when everything switched over to digital things changed a bit. I did a ton of research, rented each brand of camera and sets of lenses to see which I preferred. I rented them from places like www.lensrentals.com. After going back and forth, I felt like Canon was the right fit for me. I felt like it was more user friendly and felt better in my hand. My first Canon was a Canon Rebel xti, and while it was a great camera, it wasn't a full frame camera and I really preferred to shoot on a full frame. I get a lot of emails about what I shoot with. I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II. I love my camera and its a perfect fit for me. I will tell you though that it took alot of practice and alot of training to figure out how to use it well. There are still things that I'm learning about my camera everyday.

One thing I also want to start this year is to help the starving phototographer get better. So from time to time I'll be sharing tips and tricks, and well as showing before and after shots (which I never do). I had another photographer friend, Patti Brown of Patti Brown Photography and Kaleidoscope (www.pattibrownphotography.com) of Virginia (who was a sorority sister of mine)mentor me at first. She started about a year before me and helped pave the way for me. I am for ever grateful to her for encouraging me in this passion of mine. I was reluctant at first but she really did nudge me along and I'm so glad she did. We continue to share tips and tricks and it's wonderful to have someone else like that to bounce your ideas off of. Over the last 4 years I have invested a lot of money in knowing what I know and how I edit. And while I won't give all of my secrets away, I will share a few things from time to time to help you on your way.

I've heard it said many times, and I couldn't agree more...its not the camera you use, its the artist behind the camera. Its like asking a painter, what type of brushes he or she uses to paint his or her masterpiece. You don't ask them that....because its their eye and their talent that makes their work so great. I see all these people that have these BIG, FANCY cameras, yet they don't know how to use them. They look at the back of the digital screen and wonder "why doesn't this look good?" I was there. I did it too. I remember I took a class at the local vo-tech when I first started to get to know my camera, and honestly I have to tell you, it was a complete waste of time. I remember asking the professor, "I've heard that great photography is all in the numbers, is that true?"....and he told me it was not true. Fast forward 5 years and I'm here to tell you that the numbers mean a lot. It will make a lot of difference in your pictures..knowing what those numbers do. But there is alot that that goes into making a good picture...not just the numbers....I'll get into that later. I remember being so frustrated because my pictures were never looking like other photographers because I had no idea what I was doing... But one thing I also realized was that their pictures didn't look that great either with out the use of Photoshop. So, here's what I did. I researched and looked at other photographers work, studied it, read books, and went to workshops, took mentoring sessions with other photographers all around the country. I invested a lot of money to know what I know, but that is what got me to where I am today. I feel like I offer a totally different look and style than most other photographers in my area.

Here's a few tips:
1. READ your camera manual...from cover to cover...know how to work your camera...Understand what aperature means, and what shutter speed does, and what depth of field means.

2. Take those darn filters off your camera lens. I was just in a local photography shop here in OKC the other day, and the lady behind the counter was trying "add on" a sale to this client of hers, and sold it...however, they are no good. The only thing they are good for is to protect your lens, and that is what you have a lens cap for. You have just paid a $1000 for a lens that has super sharp glass and you are going to put a $30 piece of glass in front of it...take it off, I promise, you'll immediately have sharper pictures.

Ok, so back to the whole Canon vs. Nikon thing...Here's the conclusion I've come to....They are equally as great. Its like asking the difference in a Ford and a Chevy. In the last 5 years the only thing I've shot with has been a Canon, so the images straight out of the camera (SOOC) are all I've ever seen. Well, Don (who shoots with a Nikon), a friend of mine went on a Safari not too long ago and asked me if I'd look at his pictures, so I did, and I edited a few and here's what I came up with. The SOOC picutres that come out of Canon and Nikon look exactly the same..Its what you do in photoshop that can make the difference. Here is what I'm talking about.

I mean don't get me wrong its a cute picture, but it looks so much better after post processing.

So, stop beating yourself over the head about whether or not you made the right choice (like I do all the time) and use what you have to make beautiful images. This post is to encourage you on your journey in the photographer in all of us.

Disclaimer: I do not claim to be the best photographer out there. I know that I'm not. Photography for me is all about the journey and the people I meet along the way, and maybe travel the world a little while I'm at it. I realize I am better at some aspects of Photography than others, but I am constantly learning new things because there are so many facets to photography.

Happy New Year. I can't believe its already 2011. That sounds so weird to say, doesn't it? Well, I'm sure just like you, I've already set some resolutions into place for 2011. I've decided that while I love photography dearly, I need to focus on my children while they are still little. So, I've set some boundries into place. I'm going to limit my sessions per month so that I can spend more time with my family and less time working. Don't get me wrong, I've completely loved meeting and spending time with your families, but I love my family more. And I will continue to shoot families as well as all other types of sessions, just not as many. I'm exhausted really. I'm not exactly sure how I've survived the past year shooting some 200+ sessions, but I do know its only by the grace of God. I need to spend more time with Him too.

I already have lots on the calendar for this year that I can't wait to share with you. I'm so excited really, but in moderation.

Merry Christmas from the Stovers

Once a year these beautiful flowers (ragweed) bloom in October here in Oklahoma, and I knew that is where I wanted to take our family pictures this year. The tricky thing was, I had almost every. single. evening booked with photoshoots for other families during the month of October. So by the time I actually was able to shoot our family's pics there were only a few patches of these flowers left. So, one day, we had a cancellation due to a sick kid, so I got everyone ready, and we met my fellow friend and photographer Kristin Cook to help me take a few pics of my family, with me actually in the pictures. Its a tricky thing to do, but nonetheless, we did it. Getting cards designed and was another thing in the midst of designing for other families. However, I think our card turned out pretty cute. Thank you again to all my clients for making this such an incredible and memorable year. I'm so thankful to you all for trusting me to take pictures of your loved ones. Merry Christmas from the Stover's.

Happy Birthday Neighbor!!!

This is my beautiful neighbor, Sara Gae. Its her birthday today. She just turned 30. :) Anyway, we have lived across the street from each other for 13 -1 years. The two of us have been dreaming big dreams together while watching our kiddos play in our front yards and in the street during the summertime. We literally sit on our front porches and trade ideas and ask each other's opinions on things, ideas about life, etc. I can not even begin to tell you how thankful I am for her. She has been there for me in so many instances. For example, like chocolate chips when I'm baking chocochip cookies, milk, but one instance I remember in particular....After the birth of my twins, my mom came to stay with me for well, a long time. When she left, I was standing in the middle of the street waving goodbye, completely in tears (thinking how am I going to do this?) and who was there, Sara Gae. She gave me a huge hug and I think I probably cried on her shoulder for probably 5 minutes. I will never forget it.

Fast foward 8 years. Sara Gae has always had this incredible gift of making all things, beautiful. No really, she does. God has truly blessed her with this gift. She particularly has this gift with flowers and with decorating. The ideas that come out of her head completely blow my mind. She always, always has fresh flowers in her home because they make her happy. Well, a few years ago, the Norman Living featured her home in their magazine. Well, she did all the styling for the shoot, and the response was a hit. So the publisher asked her to become a part of their team. And so, she did. Every month, in the new Oklahoma magazine, called Slice, she has a feature about "Setting the Table". She styles different table settings for the season and writes a piece about it. I got to take her profile pic for the magazine, so that was exciting for me. So, please, if you haven't already picked up your copy, pick it up, her ideas are fabulous. I did not take the pictures in the magazine. Those pictures are done by the amazingly talented, Keith Rinearson. I love you sweet friend. Your friendship, truly has been such a blessing to me. Happy 30th.

Ben & Katie {MARRIED}

This is going to be a long post. I shot this wedding a few months ago and honestly have been working on it bit by bit. It happened to fall at the same time as my busy family season. I literally shot 45 families in the last 2 months...for me that is a lot. And because I'm a one woman show, it takes me a little while to do things. I like to touch every single picture making adjustments as I see fit. I never got a chance to post any of these images from Ben and Katie's wedding. So here they are.

I have to brag on this couple a bit. Mostly the bride since I have gotten to know her a little bit more than the groom. She is like sunshine. She has this smile that literally lights up the room. She has this laugh that is so contageous. Katie and Ben have such a sweet chemistry. I could totally feel the love. They also have the most precious little girl, Bella, who happens to be the flower girl. She did such a good job.

Then, there is the father of the bride. I don't think I've ever met an FOB quite so talented. He is quite the artist. You see, he made every. single. flower arragement in the ceremony and the reception. I'm talking the bride's bouquet, the bridesmaids, the table decor...etc...etc. HE DID IT ALL! No, he's not a florist, he's an accountant. I know, I know, it doesn't add up. (NO PUN INTENDED :)) He has the biggest heart and you could tell he was such a sweet Daddy wanting everything to be perfect for his little girl.

Congratulations Katie and Ben...you truly deserve the best.

Its the most wonderful time of the year

I love this time of year. I love how excited my kids get when we get out all the lights and christmas decor. Its crazy when I look back to see how fast this year has flown by. I keep telling my kids to stop growing up....its happening right before my eyes. I'm so thankful I have a job that allows me to be home and there when they need me. Tree Up and decorated- check, Christmas shopping done-check, Christmas gifts wrapped-check. Editing not checked. I still a few projects I'm working on. More to come this month... What do you think of my tree?

God is so good that He has given me this passion for photography and that I am able to pursue it. I'm so thankful for Jesus that he was born this month 2010 years ago. Thank you God for Jesus! You are the reason for the season.

The Delightful "D" family

This is officially my last family for the season. Some people say that is great to end things on a high note. Well, in this case that is the truth. This family was truly delightful to work with. We had so much fun just hanging out, laughing and taking pics. We were at their incredible home that looked as if we were in Italy. They were so laid back which is always nice, and I didn't have to bribe them with candy or make funny noises to get them all to smile. And after our time together I felt like I had made some new friends. And aren't they all so beautiful. It helps when you have pretty parents to have pretty babies. Enjoy your sneak peek.
